Eternia is alive and well over on Amazon—or at least it certainly seems that way. Just as things continue to move forward on a long-delayed live-action film version of Masters of the Universe, there’s now been an update on a live-action She-Ra show you probably forgot was happening in the first place.
Variety reports that Amazon has hired writer Heidi Schreck (Billions, Nurse Jackie) to write and executive produce a live-action She-Ra show. News of the show first broke in 2021, which also has Nicole Kassell (The Woodsman) attached to direct and executive produce along with Robin Sweet of DreamWorks Animation. That last one is likely because the last time audiences saw She-Ra was on Netflix’s animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which DreamWorks produced. This show has nothing to do with that one though. It’s just the same character.
If the show comes to fruition, it’ll be the first time anywhere fans have seen She-Ra in live-action. And it certainly isn’t a coincidence that this is happening as director Travis Knight (Bumblebee) continues work on a live-action Masters of the Universe movie starring Nicholas Galitzine and Camila Mendes. There’s no indication there are plans for a crossover just yet but, nevertheless, it marks a significant investment into Mattel’s Masters of the Universe world and it would certainly seem like a possibility if one or both are a hit.
Now, our skepticism here comes from years and years of starts and stops on other versions of Masters of the Universe adaptations. And while most of those were movies centered on He-Man, and this is a She-Ra TV show, the inability to get rolling in that world speaks volumes. Both He-Man and She-Ra share a similar tone that one can imagine is very difficult to nail down in live-action. Do you take things 100% seriously and, if so, how do you still make it stand apart from Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings? Or, do you lean into the animation and make it a bit more fantastic? A bit more playful? Then, if you do that, what does that look like? No matter what it looks like though, it’s expensive. The training, the costumes, the sets, the creatures, etc. No wonder both properties have seen their biggest successes in animation.
But at this point, especially with He-Man and now more likely with She-Ra, they’re coming. And hiring a writer like Schreck, who wrote and starred in a play that was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize (What the Constitution Means to Me) certainly shows a commitment to quality. Let’s all cross our Grayskulls that it works out.
