The Apple Watch Series 11, expected in 2025, is shaping up to feature one of the most significant upgrades since the introduction of LTE in the Series 3. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to replace Intel 4G chips with MediaTek 5G modems, a major shift that could enhance data speeds for apps like Maps, music streaming, and FaceTime audio calls.
The new 5G RedCap modem, designed for IoT devices and wearables, offers download speeds of up to 220 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 120 Mbps. While not as fast as the 5G modems in iPhones, this upgrade will make the Apple Watch more responsive for daily tasks. This move could also represent one of MediaTek’s largest orders from Apple, solidifying its place in the premium wearables market.
The current generation of the Apple Watch may be the last one to feature an Intel LTE modem.
Additionally, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is rumored to gain satellite connectivity, a feature already available in iPhones. This upgrade would be particularly useful for users who venture into remote areas, enhancing safety and navigation capabilities.
Interestingly, while the Series 10 commemorated the Apple Watch’s tenth anniversary, the Series 11 may hold the true milestone, as the product launched in 2015, a year after its announcement. Given the modest changes introduced in Series 10, the Series 11 might bring more substantial innovations.
With faster connectivity and potentially groundbreaking features, the Apple Watch Series 11 could mark a pivotal evolution for Apple’s wearable lineup, catering to both everyday users and outdoor enthusiasts.
