While we’ve occasionally questioned Jean-Luc Picard’s tastes in both food and drink, no matter how you feel about Earl Grey you can’t deny that he and the Starfleet of the 2360s had great taste in mug design. Taste so great, in fact, almost a decade after the real-world mug TNG used to highlight Picard’s favorite past time was discontinued, it’s making its way back on sale.
Today Master Replicas confirmed that it’s releasing a new “Picard Cup” replicating the design used in TNG, Voyager, and Star Trek: Picard, collaborating with the original homeware company that provided the mugs for TNG art department to use during production, Bodum. One of several drink receptacles Picard imbibes with throughout the show, this particular mug—designed as part of Bodum’s BISTRO system in 1974 by Carsten Jørgensen—had been on sale due to both its iconic, simple retro-future design and its fandom association with Star Trek until 2016, when it was sadly finally discontinued… until now, that is.
Bodum and Master Replicas’ revival of the design will release in a limited run of packs of four mugs, faithfully replicating the glass and plastic design—the only difference being that this time it’ll feature the logos of Star Trek, Bodum, and Master Replicas etched on the bottom of the cups’ bases. Still, that’s probably a small price to pay if you just want to pretend your iPad is an actual PADD and daintily sip on something while reading it like you’re the captain of the Enterprise. It doesn’t even have to be Earl Grey! God, it probably shouldn’t be. Go with Janeway’s choices over that, honestly.
The actual price to pay however, is the cost of the set of four mugs: they’re available for pre-order now for $55, ahead of a release in February 2025.
