Samsung is reportedly working on a new AR/VR device, marking its re-entry into the market after the Gear VR. While the company has been quiet about specifics, recent reports shed light on its plans. Initially, Samsung intended to launch the device in Q1 2024 to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro, but the release has been delayed, with a potential developer version now expected in late 2024. The most likely release date appears to be 2025, according to Samsung’s latest earnings report.
Details about the device’s design and specifications remain sparse. However, it’s known that Samsung is collaborating with Google on the software and Qualcomm for the chipset. The device is expected to offer a mixed-reality experience and could feature both a smart glasses-like form factor and a head-mounted version, according to a patent filing spotted by 91Mobiles.
The patent suggests that the device will blend augmented reality with virtual reality, allowing users to toggle between the two. It may also offer functionality similar to the Apple Vision Pro, enabling the display of hidden objects or digital overlays in the user’s environment. Additionally, the device could support various connectivity options, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 5G, and more, allowing integration with other devices.

The patent also hints at features such as a battery module, antenna, optical devices, speakers, and microphones, though it’s unclear whether the device will be powered by an internal battery or require an external power source. Despite the lack of concrete information, the collaboration with Google suggests that the software experience will be robust.
